Competitions » Closed – Comp 5 – Race to the Mun

Mod Description:

Kerbal Space Program Moon

This competition is now closed.

The competition was extremely close until TlCH0NDRlUS’ late entry with an amazing time of 40 minutes 46 seconds. Congratulations.

This competition was inevitable once KSP had been updated with a functioning moon so here it is…

For this competition the aim is to reach the Mun as fast as you can and then land safely using only the stock parts bin and one of 3 Lunar Lander Modules.

How To Enter

1. You need to take a screenshot and/or video of your flight. The screenshot needs to show the time of your flight and your spacecraft safely landed on the moon.

2. Use a picture hosting service to upload your photo such as Flickr or Photobucket or if you record a video of your attempt, use a video hosting service such as Youtube to upload your video.

3. Post your picture, or a link to your picture/video in the comments section below. For pictures you can use the tags <@img src="PICTURE URL HERE" /> – just removed that @ symbol first

4. Redesign and go back to step 1.

Rules

Standard parts only with the addition on a Lunar Lander Module Available Here and it must be a safe landing.

Competition closes 30th November so you have plenty of time to perfect your spacecrafts and flights.

Get building and good luck and let us all know if it is made out of cheese or not!!

p.s don’t forget the time warp function to help things along!

    Anyone else struggling with this?

I’m finding it hard to accurately aim at the moon.

      @Andycambo:
Aim your rocket along the 90° line. Use the number on the bottom of the level. This should make your orbit parallel to the moon’s.

I’ve landed on the moon with the TARDIS mod before… I guess that doesn’t count :P

Just tried it with a 12 stage rocket, and I got all the way to the moon and then crashed on the lunar surface. XD

I had more than enough fuel, but, sadly, I messed up at the last minute. :(

Also, didn’t do it in good time (~21 days). I might try again.

This challenge is definitely possible to do.

I highly suggest that anyone doing this challenge use the Lunar Lander Part Mod (the one with the golden landing feet) as it includes a sturdier and lighter decoupler and a smaller SAS module.

In under 24 hours to boot, pretty proud of myself.

You’ll need to post your pictures online, we can’t see the pictures that are on your computer.

Upload them, post the link and you’ll be the first on the leaderboard!

Not easy but not impossible :)

Now I don’t know if this will be considered as a safe landing but here’s my best shot so far. Also I hope pictures won’t be too large

    The rocket:

Orbiting the moon. A nice view from there. Going back to earth is easy from this point but that’s not what we came for:

    Hi guys,

I’ve been playing KSP for a while now.

After some failed designs I managed to escape the orbit of Kearth, but I missed the Mun by a long shot. I am now in the orbit of the Unnamed Star(how about Tau Ceti, any Rama fans?; the closest star to the Sun is Alpha Centauri, but is a binary star sistem

    Here are some pics:

I have a suggestion for those who want to get in the mood of ship designing and flight, since KSP has no music, yet. Tune in on winamp: Atmospheric ambient space music – http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=1325240&k=fa1jo93O_raeF0v9 (it’s just a .pls, don’t worry)

    Hi again, guys.

Andycambo, I have a question. Some part off the lunar lander appear as having a red hue on the texture in-game, that’s how I got them from the forum. Have any idea why? I can use those parts, they are functional. Will this invalidate or have any effect on the results?

    Cheers.

    • andycambo on said:

No idea why the red hue is there. If you’ve downloaded them from the mods page then there is no reason for it to invalidate any entries.

After-all we are all here to just have some fun and I don’t see any reason why anyone would cheat.

I trust everyone has entered fairly and, hopefully, are having fun whilst doing it – that’s the whole point of the website.

Well… The Mun Lander has landed; crash landed, but safe. Made it in 6h51m31s. I know it may seem impossible, especially with the craft I have, but do the math and check the parts I used, you’ll find something interesting.

I feel that it was too easy with those parts because they have too much power. The tank has 500 fuel and the engine has 120 thrust with 2f/s consumption. So, I think that the parts are a little exaggerated. I’ll try with the other parts too.

    4h15min6sec

Took only pictures when landed, i hope this is enough.

TlCH0NDRlUS, I would really like to see what craft did you use to exit Kerbin’s orbit. I see that you have plenty of fuel left on you lunar module. For the craft I used it was essential that I used extra SAS systems or it took a lot of manual craft control to guide it to the Mun, yet you only have the Capsule SAS.

    Touchdown at 40min 46sec!

The landing was a little bit rough but i think it still counts.
